Back to The Bulls

So, I am back in my acrylic atelier for a wild Spanish fiesta… have been painting the bulls again fro 3 days now, I am a big mess, all covered in paints, these beast are really wild! When the bulls catch me, they don;t let me go for a little while, until I am exhausted. So I guess I will stay with them some more days in my rainbow atelier, but will also do some  bullfight paintings in water colour, which I rarely did in fact, most of them being in acrylic and gouache.

A special word for those who hate bullfight: I understand you, but the best would be for you and for me, that you skip this post!  :-)

Like a Bull in an Artshop

I have added today some bullfight paintings and other stuff to my new online shop Miki’s Mart.

It is not easy to make a choice, what to put for sale, and what not. Tastes are so different! And I have had the experience in my life that my taste often does not correspond to the clients’ taste. or at least there is a time difference… what I most like today my clients will like most in about 2 years!

I have often wondered about this phenomena, as I have heard the same from other artists.

I was asking myself if the artist is always  ahead of his clients’ time…

Anyway, among all my bullfight paintings, and as a contradiction to the theory I just presented and the aim that a shop which should be to sell what what people want to buy,  I chose to put for sale this one above, which is my most favourite bullfight painting of all time!

Back Fighting The Bulls…

toroscape28-s

I will have soon “to fight the bulls ‘ again, so i have started yesterday  to practise again, always on the search of new bullfighting techniques…

I have painted that one today, a quite complicated mixed technique!

By the way, if you are still  interested in my bullfight calendar 2009, or already in the new calendars 2010, or in my bullfight mugs, simply got to

my bullfighting art site

The Toroscapes

toroscape-0101-s

One would not believe it, but judging by the quantity of hits on my bullfight post on this blog and of  enquiries I personally receive in my mailbox:

there is a big market for Bullfight paintings around the world!

A friend of mine from the U.S.A., who is trying to help me market my calendars there, wrote to me:

“… One thing to remember is that America is a microcosm of many different people, styles and tastes…no different than any place else really, except here we do have a lot of special interest groups, and lobbyists for special needs. The Animal Rights groups are very powerful and influence a lot of laws and perceptions. Bull Fighting items of any kind will be difficult to mass market….the cultural climate is not conducive…”

Well, this is certainly true in Europe too, and even more so where I live. But I have my very own experience in this matter and I answered to him that what people publicly follow is one thing and what they then privately do is quite another.  I have said many times: I sold many bullfight paintings to people who hate bullfighting! I think this says a lot…

Anyway, I have decided to create a new website entirely dedicated to my Bull and Bullfight Art, simply called

T O R O

And to inaugurate it, I started a new series of bullfight paintings, from the “Scapes Family”, called

The Toroscapes.

Like the others Scapes, a mixed technique of classical and digital art.

Like always, “only” available as Giclee prints… an amazing printing technique by the way, the results are really fascinating, so true in colours, details and structure… and with the huge advantage that you can get them in different sizes and on different formats, canvas even!

With this new website I have also opened a new blog, dedicates to the Bulls. You are very welcome to join me there, to comment or even become a co-author. And honestly, I would love to meet some people with whom I can speak about the bulls!

English, French, Spanish and German languages are welcome!

Another piece from the series

“La Création du Monde”

Kevin seems to think that it is silly… well, I like it silly sometimes! He even thought that I had painted one bull too many, but just because he did not understand that the green one was in fact a horse!

Anyway most of my paintings from this series must be considered with humour.

And if you want some serious bullfight (I could say “bulls..t” – sorry, I am learning all these bad words from Kevin!)

Greetings, from Me!

In my last post about The Labyrinth in my new gallery I told you about the  wonderful fine art greeting cards The Bay Attic created from my Bullfight paintings. You could even have a glance of them on one wall.

The Bay Attic has also created many different greeting cards from my Portugal sketches and from my Fantascapes.

All of them on high quality card, in square format, 15 x 15 cm, single-folded, blank inside for personal messages, and individually wrapped with matching envelope in cellophane.

In short: a great product!

The Bay Attic will present them in their programme at The Scottish Trade Fair in January 2009. I must say that I feel very excited about it!

As for me I will try to marketing them in Portugal, Spain and France…

wish me good luck!

PS: If there is anybody outside there who knows how I can find the right people to contact, please drop me a line.

The Labyrinth

So, here we are, all my toros, at least all which haven’t be sacrificed to some aficionado, are comfortably installed in my new gallery.

Not a round arena, as they are used to, more a kind of labyrinth

No sand on the ground but at least the same colour

No real sun but great light though…

just waiting for the public now!

Well, not yet really, there is still work to do before we can open, but in one week or so, we will be ready…

The eagle-eyed amongst you may have noticed, on the right side, attached to the wall, the wonderful square greeting cards which my friends from The Bay Attic have created from my paintings and which we are planning to market in several European countries.

PS: Legend tells of the Minotaur that lives within the labyrinth, eventually slain by the wily Theseus… I don’t know if such a beast roams this one, but Kevin certainly does!

Bulls outside The Ring

Yesterday in Turre was a wonderful day for my special bullfight paintings exhibition at the Plaza de Toros. But a surprise awaited us there. We thought there would be nobody until 4 o’clock, one hour before the corrida starts, but as we arrived the place was full. People and cars everywhere. I must confess that I felt quite scared at that moment and wanted to drive back home. But instead, I thought to take the bull by the horns. I had spotted a police car somewhere and equipped with tons of feigned self-assurance I entered the arena in search of the policemen. I met a man. who, apparently, was in charge of the organisation. I asked him:

“Do you know where the police are?”

He looked at me scared.

“Why, has something happened?”

Funny, really… I guess he was then very relieved as I told him about my bullfight paintings stuff! He was then so kind to follow me outside and discuss with me how I imagined to mount the exhibition, considering the quantity of cars and people everywhere. Thinking that I had not much to lose by being cheeky, I explained to him quickly my ideal plan, i.e:

“…right by the entrance and take as much room as possible!”

This was indeed much too cheeky and he said:

“Well, then, we will wait for the mayor and I will discuss the subject with him. He will be here soon.”

Rich of former experiences with town halls and mayors, I thought that nothing would happen, neither soon nor late, and I was prepared to wait there the whole day.

I could not believe it as 5 minutes later, the mayor stood in front of me, extending his hand, telling me that he was aware of the exhibition and proposing me to organise it exactly where and how I wanted!

No doubt:

I will vote for him at the next election!

You have no idea how happy I am to live now in a nice little Spanish town, which shows so much respect and unconventionality for art and new ideas. This really was the last drop to make me feel totally home.. as I met Kevin, I felt emotionally home, but now, I even feel home geographically!!!

We mounted the exhibition, had loads of fun and visitors, and even the firemen (los bomberos) arrived (see picture above!) in case some anti-bullfight fanatics would set fire to my paintings. What a service, really!

Even the Star bullfighter of the corrida, Jesus Almeria, came with part of his staff and had a long look at my paintings, and declared some as very beautiful. He even paused for a photo with me.

Great, kind and humble guy!

Nothing to do with the macho type some people imagine that these matadors are!

It was great to see him fighting his two bulls later on … Bravo Jesus, and  the others ones too, Julio Benitez El Cordobes and Alejandro Carmona,  with whom we spent two wonderful hours after the exhibition!

I have the proof: I am a Bull!

You might have understood, in the meanwhile, that we have just moved further down in Spain, from Albir (provincia de Alicante) to Turre (provincia de Almeria).

2 days ago we found out, by accident that today the big town festivities are starting, 4 days of continuous Spanish fiesta, which means a hell of a noise and fireworks all the time. And, of course, a bullfight on Sunday at 5 PM!

Well, Turre does not have a plaza de toros, so the town hired a portable one and erected it on a hill at the outskirts of the village. As I heard it I ran to the town hall and asked for permission to exhibit my bullfight paintings there on Sunday. I was not very optimistic about the issue, as I have a long experience with this kind of permission, and normally you have to go through hundreds of different institutions to get it.

It was pretty busy at the town hall because of the fiesta and I had to wait a long time. Impatient as I am I was about to go as a woman came to me and showed some interest in my request. She told me that she would discuss it with the authorities and call me back. I thought:

“Yes, manana!”

which here, in Spain, means something like: never!

I could not believe it as she called me back yesterday -really the day after- and said that it was OK. The police would certainly try to stop me, she said, but I must say that I had the permission from the Culture Department. Now really, my town hall here deserves a big applause  for its fast and unconventional decision! MUCHAS GRACIAS!

So here we go again, my next exhibition, Sunday 5th of October, from 12 til 5 PM, at the portable Plaza de Toros in Turre. I expect you all! (you are not obliged to enter the arena if you find it disgusting, I am exhibiting outside!… it is just safer!)

Oh, by the way, don’t think twice: it’s me the bull on the photo. We went to the plaza this morning to get an idea how to mount the exhibition, and this is how I suddenly looked like…

And yes, it is the poster of my exhibition on the arena wall… added with the computer right now, but soon there for real!
